how we work

The way we work is through:

co-production

What does that mean?

Well, for us, when we build our different learning spaces such as a course, a panel or a podcast episode, we want to build it with people who hold expertise and experience around the topic or idea.
We also want them to build it with us every step of the way.

Is it simple? No. Is it meaningful? Yes!
Here’s a little more about how we try to do this:

Phases of co-production

Who’s involved?

For us it’s:

  • People with lived and living experience
  • Their family and friends
  • Carers
  • Mental health professionals
  • Learning specialists
  • Community members

Every step of the way!

Co-plan

We think about what to create, who to involve, and how to do it.

We think about:

  • Topics the community want to learn about
  • Who will be involved
  • How power dynamics might arise
  • Accessibility
  • How to record and evaluate the process
  • And lots more!

Co-design

We make the thing we planned on making – together.

For us, co-design means bringing together people with lived and professional experience to build the learning together, while they learn from each other. There are lots of different ways we do this. It could be workshops where we get to come together, participate, create and share our different perspectives on a topic. As a co-design team, we then turn those ideas into courses or learning content.

Co-deliver

We share what we made together with our community.

For our courses and podcast, this means it is always co-delivered by professional and lived and/or living expertise alongside each other.

Co-evaluate

We see how it went and we make it better.

After we’ve shared it with the community, we check in: How did it go? What can we improve? We gather feedback and ideas from everyone involved and see how we can make it better and more meaningful for the community.

Are there challenges? Absolutely!
Are we getting it right 100% of the time? Absolutely not!
Are we always trying to learn how to do it better? Absolutely!

At discovery college we are committed to co-production to tackle issues of power and exclusion, bringing together all kinds of expertise to create authentic and meaningful spaces to learn together.
